Sunday Post: sluggish mind….sweet surprise.

DSC_0031

My thoughts were written on Saturday evening.

Outside My Window.....the temperatures ranged in the low 20 deg F on Saturday, and on my way to my car in the morning (early as I was headed off to work), I thought that “I am now done with winter. I am ready for spring like temperatures.”  Yep, me, the one who loves winter is done with the season. Truly though, I think I feel this way because my third child - second daughter - lost my pair of boots. I am without winter boots, and that is bothersome. I am in no mood to buy a pair.  Besides that, it is not that pretty outside. We have hit the ugly period of winter; dirty snow, slushy yards, too cold for the park and bikes, but no snow to play in. On an upbeat note, I am no longer driving to work in the dark; that is refreshing.

I am Listening to..... sleeping sounds of the 4 and 7 year old.

I am Thinking.....I am tired; don’t know how the night girls truly function after their shift.  I was on call last Thursday, and I was called in. I only worked from 11pm- 330 am, but with driving, I was gone from 10pm - 415 am.  I am thinking...my body needs more than 9 hours of sleep in 48 hours. I am thinking....my body is changing a bit as I am growing older. I am thinking….I have become a sloth, and need to get my self back into exercising gear especially since cycling season is right around the corner.

I am Grateful for..... the ability to keep my eyes open while driving especially after working on little sleep time. I am grateful for.... modern medicine’s ability to repair a little boy’s broken arm (not my son; my best friend’s son).  I am grateful for....the pretend accents, and giggles that flow throughout a conversation between number 2 and number 3.

I am Pondering..... not too much as truly my mind is a bit mush from little sleep, and recovering from being sick earlier in the week.

I am Reading..... same books as last week’s post.  I should mention though; I am soooo hooked into The Name of the Wind.
I am sooo hooked into the writing of Patrick Rothfuss.    Love.This.Writing...This.Book....This.Story....Kvothe. Sunday evening update: I am done with The Name of the Wind, and oh wow!!!

I am photographing.....dogs, and children.

I am Listing..... what I should be accomplishing, and doing. Then looking at said list with little checked off.

I am Creating.....a zone in mind to crawl into when being bombed by thousand of questions/demands.  haha...just jesting, although, I do crave that zone at times during life.

On my Zune.....an audiobook, I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore. So far, I am finding the story so-so, but I am thinking that the story is about ready to take off; I am hoping.  When I listen to an audiobook then I usually do not listen to music.

To Live my Faith..... I have not done much in this area last week. Hmmm...curve balls thrown my way kind of messed with my routine of sorts.

I am Hoping and Praying.....a good week that finds me keeping mindful of… Only speak words that make souls stronger and “When you talk, do not say harmful things, but say what people need—words that will help others become stronger.”Ephesians 4:29 (NCV)

Around the House..... piles of laundry; this seems to never go away, not completely.

From the Kitchen.....  a horrid, horrid, horrid dinner. It has been a long while since I made such a complete disaster out of dinner. My poor children, my poor husband. Me...I was reading aloud our family book, and saw their expressions so therefore I did not partake. Never again will I attempt chicken and tofu nuggets with this recipe as it used a few different ingredients; different flavor than we are use to for nuggets.

One of My Favorite Things..... chocolate, and I have been eating far too much of the stuff as of late.

The Children this week..... Benjamin, Evie, Elizabeth, and Grace are status quo for the moment. Elliana surprised me with a lovely card.  She made this card; drew the cover, and then painted.  She placed this card within my current book: The Name of the Wind.  She placed it there on Friday morning while I tried to peel my eyes open after only 2 hours of sleep; I did not know she did this.  Several hours later, while reading, this sweet card fell out of my book. Such a nice surprise, and a much needed pick-me up. The inside simple read; “I love you Mom”.  Sweet.
Isaiah is once again highly interested in our dogs. This time, however, he has chosen Ginger, and he has decided that Ginger must sleep with him, and she has for the last 3 nights.  For now, I am fine with this arrangement, but once shedding season hits then this must change. I am hoping that he will be out of this high interest by the shedding comes around.  A funny thing though, Ginger thinks his bed is hers, and will not sleep on the floor.  So you know, we could hold our ground and say no to Isaiah but this is a battle not worth the fight, at least not now.  Melt downs/tantrums are not fun to deal with, and, lately, he has been having several every evening..
By the way, Isaiah is always interested in our dogs, but the level of interest has elevated this past week.

A Few Plans for the Rest of the Week.....visit to EJ’s classroom to see her book project presentation of Pegasus. The project consists of dressing as one of the book’s characters, and present a monologue of/as said character. I work one day during the week, and have a meeting to start off my new role at work as the diabetic champion for my unit. The word champion makes me a bit uncomfortable; seems too dramatic. Blog wise, I shall see where my posts take me, but I do plan at least one book review, book club discussion post of Villette, and a Song of the Week post. Honestly though, I have not been much into writing book reviews lately. I want to simply say that I liked or not liked a book, and few reasons why, but I don’t want to truly analyze.

On this date.....February 26, 2009…. The Love Letters by Madeleine L'Engle  and  on February 27, 2009… Hood by Stephen Lawhead It has been two years since I read this book, and still to this day, I think about the story. Still to this day, EJ and I say a phrase to one another that I read within these pages. If you have not read Hood, you should give a read.

Photo examples of....Elliana’s card, and a few of Isaiah with Ginger.

Read to Me Picture Books: Boom Chicka Rock, Goldilicious, Madeline, Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy

picturebookchallenge2

Danielle at There's a Book is hosting the Read to Me - Picture Book Challenge in 2011  The goal of the challenge is ... "to read with the kids in your life and/or enjoy picture books in general."

Throughout the year, I will be posting mini-reviews of the picture books that I read aloud to GD and IJ.  During our first month(January)  of read aloud books it dawned on me that a natural extension of this read aloud challenge would be to incorporate the development of GD’s oral narration skills. Therefore, the “reviews” will largely based on GD’s narration.  This is a skill that she needs to develop which means I hope that as the year moves along that the narrations will as well; expand and become a bit more detailed.  In the meantime, the “reviews” will be a bit on the lean side.  I do hope that you, my reader, will enjoy this journey – the journey of read aloud picture book posts featuring GD’s narration.  Check out Trivium Pursuit: Ten Things To Do With Your Child Before Age 10 and scroll down to Oral Narration for further information on narration.

Boom Chicka Rock
by John Archambault
illustrated by Suzanne Tanner Chitwood
copyright: 2004
Publisher:  Philomel

DescriptionFrom the co-author of the bestselling Chicka Chicka Boom Boom comes this adorable counting adventure for children of all ages! Suzanne Tanner Chitwood's colorful collage artwork features mischievous mice dancing through the story. Readers can count down the Congo Line and tally up the Tangoing, Tip-Toeing mice on every page, and learn about time, too!

A rollicking, rhythmic romp through the numbers. Read it out loud -- it rocks.

GD’s Narration (age 4):  I liked the mouse and the cake.  I liked when the two mouse rode in the bowls.  It was so funny.

Me:  This is a wonderful book to read aloud because of the rhyming flow of this book was great fun.  I did wish, at times, that the actual numbers (each mouse was a number) was easier to follow.  At times, the mice were a bit all over the place on the page which made it a bit difficult to reinforce number order, and counting.  That is just me though, and we just worked around my issue and still reinforced numbers, order and counting.

Goldilicious
by Victoria Kann
copyright: 2009
publisher: HarperCollins

Description: Being Pinkalicious is pinkatastic, especially when she's accompanied by her pet unicorn, Goldilicious. Goldie is a roller-skating, kite-flying, high-jumping unicorn who will protect Pinkalicious from the evil wizardry of her little brother, Peter. Together, Pinkalicious and Goldilicious can conquer anything!

GD’s Narration (age 4):   It was so beautiful.  I liked the horse and I like Pinkalicious.  I didn’t like the brother.

Me:  This is a sweet story with fantastic illustrations, and a wonderful imagination of the little girl.   I like this story; a lot.  I know that Pinkalicious in this series, tends to be a favorite for moms, but for me, I like this one better. Why is that?  Well, Pinkalcious (in the first book) is a bit troublesome to me; she does not listen to her parents.  Whereas this book, Goldilicious, is about Pink’s fantastic imagination.  What girl does not/ did not dream of a horse all her own? How cool to have one, and one that is a great friend that can do all sorts of things.  Between the lovely imagination, and fantastic illustrations; I like reading this book aloud to GD.  That is good since GD gravitates to this book frequently.

Madeline
by Ludwig Bemelmans
first published: 1939
our edition,published: 1993
publisher:  Viking, a division of Penguin Books USA

Description: Madeline is one of the best-loved characters in children's literature. Set in picturesque Paris, this tale of a brave little girl's trip to the hospital was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1940 and has as much appeal today as it did then. The combination of a spirited heroine, timelessly appealing art, cheerful humor, and rhythmic text makes Madeline a perennial favorite with children of all ages.

GD’s Narration (age 4):  Madeline went to the hospital to get her tonsils out. (ummm…I correct her at this point, and told her it was the appendix).  I liked the story.  My favorite page is when she is in the hospital with presents. I want to read more Madeline.

Me:  My older girls would read Madeline, and actually, I have forgotten which girl we bought Madeline for (I think it may have been EJ or even  ED). The edition that GD and I are reading is the complete tales titled: Mad About Madeline.  Six stories are contained within this book.

I really like this timeless story; good fun for the reader and listener alike.  GD and I decided to read Madeline this past week because my niece was having a Madeline birthday party, and figured that GD should have an inkling of this character.  What occurred during our reading was GD’s love love for this story.  It is nice to have a well written story to read aloud over and over again.  The funny thing was, for some reason, GD kept insisting that Madeline had her tonsils removed even when she was pointing to where the appendix resides within our bodies.  The biggest point of humor is that I do not even know where GD came up with the word tonsils as we have not read anything of this, nor has anyone in our family been sick and had their tonsils removed. This word, seemingly, came out the blue into GD’s mind.  We will be reading more Madeline stories.

Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy
by Jane O’Connor
illustrator:  Robin Preiss Glasser
copyright: 2007
publisher: HarperCollins

Description: Fancy Nancy is back! And when her family decides to get a dog, she's certain she can be fancier than ever. After all, a papillon—a small, delicate, fluffy dog—is the ultimate accessory. But her family wants a large, plain dog. How unglamorous!

With Fancy Nancy's trademark humor and warmth, Nancy discovers that real fanciness does not depend simply on appearance but more on a genuine joie de vivre, which is a fancy phrase for having lots of fun.

GD’s Narration (age 4):   I liked it!  I like the way she dresses her doll.  I like how she dresses.  I liked when she had tea with Mrs. Devine.

Me:  I adore the Fancy Nancy books!  She is such an adorable, spunky little girl who is not snotty, or rude, or disobedient which is read far too often in children stories.  These books are such fun to read, and also have a depth and richness to them due to the words used within the story. How cool to introduce vocabulary into a preschoolers world while not banging the words on their head; love the way Nancy herself adds the word into her telling, and then also defines it.   This is true for all of the Fancy Nancy books, but I must say that this book, Posh Puppy, is my favorite.  This story moved along nicely while Fancy Nancy works out a very solid and thoughtful way of obtaining a dog for her family; the pace was wonderful.  It really was fun, for a few moments, being Posh. (that was a fancy word for fancy)

Sunday Post: Oh wow!

Constitution Trail 2010-12-5b

My thoughts were written on Saturday evening.

Outside My Window.....it is rather ugly. Hard to believe, but the snow from the blizzard is just about gone, and what remains is the dirty snow. The weather was warm over the past week.  Warm enough to wear a light coat, or sweater. I do not care for warm weather in February. What is the point?  It is just a tease; the crisp, cold weather is not done with us.

I am Listening to..... and watching....Meet the Morgans...a pretty decent movie, but then again, I like Hugh Grant.

I am Thinking.....that I had a great time with my Mom as we attended two David Garrett show last weekend.  What? you say that not read my David Garrett post?  What’s up with you? Hurry on over and be in the know.... In Lieu of Song of the Week, I present.... David Garrett.

I am Grateful for..... smiles on EM’s face. A full moon on clear night.

I am Pondering..... Several quotes/references from One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp
“Some days I pick up a camera and its a hammer” p. 56
“Little nails and a steady hammer can rebuild a life - eucharisteo precedes the miracle.”  p.58
“I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.  I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything.  I have learned a secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.”  Philippians 4:11-22 (p.47)

I am Reading.....Villette by Charlote Bronte, One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

I am photographing..... I am so lame, so weak in this area, no photos taken, but I did take many photos last weekend.

I am Listing..... nothing

I am Creating..... my project life album. Lat Thursday night, I went over to Jody's home, and we started working our albums, and so far, I like. I must admit, I was a bit surprised at how long it took me to get the album up to date.

On my Zune..... Oh, Wow!…finally...a change... Muse.... AND....David Garrett....AND.... Josh Groban.  I must say, there is nothing like Muse, for me.  The music flows in my blood and sets a mood like no other music. Bliss.

To Live my Faith..... reading my Bible, memorizing Colossians, following the Bible study over at Flowing Streams.  Mostly though, being more purposeful in thought about the stuff in life to be thankful for…God’s gifts in life…thinking that I should start creating my gift list.'

I am Hoping and Praying.....hoping for patience, and a gracious heart as I “serve” my family. praying is not a natural thing for me, and that is ultimate what I am currently praying for...the natural act of falling into prayer.

Around the House..... Oh Wow!  this is huge!  we finally obtained a twin bed for IJ, AND organized our room for said bed, AND switched EM and EJ rooms, AND organized them a bit, AND started the process of moving GD into EJ’s room.

From the Kitchen..... I really need to sit down and make out a master list of the meals we like. I have not planned this week’s menu.

One of My Favorite Things..... time spent with a friend.

The Children this week..... Ben is doing well in school; nothing new to report with him.  EM is moving along with driving, but still is having a bit of a problem with first gear on our manual car.  ED finally had her birthday dinner with us. Yep, we are lame...it only took 5 months to accomplish this dinner.  It was a nice evening with her.  EJ is doing great; preparing for her book project which is due in about a week or so.  IJ is doing well. A great week at school for him. His medication increased a bit. I had a meeting with his teacher to discuss concerns about his lack of forward movement with his IEP goals. It was a great conversation; took longer than expected. I do believe that we are on the same page, and if not, pretty close. She already started focusing on a different approach for IJ; this is good. I really like this year’s team. They are fabulous; they will converse with us.  I do believe that they are the best team IJ has had during his whole time in the educational system.  I am hopeful.  GD is doing great, but a bit irked about being “kicked out” of our room.  Yes, I did use the words “kicked out” with her, but I was only jesting. Apparently she did not pick up on that jest; I had to do some repair work.  All is well.

A Few Plans for the Rest of the Week.....My niece, SA, will be celebrating her 6th birthday this week.  Family plans for the celebration, as ind a GD sleepover with the girls.  I work two shifts, and my parents will be leaving for a Florida vacation.  A lot is happening, and much is mundane.

Word(s) of the Moment....Eucharisteo... I am revisiting that word.  I defined it on my February 7th Sunday Post, but now I would like to take it a step further...ponder upon it a bit deeper, especially since it is touching  my soul.  The following is from One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp.... read, and then ponder...
”The root word of euchariseo is charis, meaning ‘grace’.  Jesus took the bread and saw it as grace and gave thanks”
….“Eucharisteo, thanksgiving, envelopes the Greek word for grace, charis.  But is also holds it derivative, the Greek word chara, meaning ‘joy’.  Joy.”
.... “Deep chara joy is found only at the table of the euCHARisteo - the table of thanksgiving.  I sit there long...wondering...is it that simple?  Is the height of my chara joy dependent on the depths of my eucharisteo thanks?”
.... “Charis. Grace.  Eucharisteo. Thanksgiving.  Chara. Joy. A triplet of stars, a constellation in the black.  A threefold cord that might hold a life?  Offer a way up into the fullest life?    Grace, thanksgiving, joy.  Eucharisteo.  A Greek word...that might make meaning of everything?”
p.32-33

On this date.....February 20, 2009….Stay In TouchSoftly, after I re-read this post, I said… “Oh, Wow!”
This was an interesting post for me to re-read especially since I keep talking about how I don’t naturally gravitate towards prayer.

Photo Notes:  I have an equipment dream list: Nikon 85mm f/1.8 lens, a macro lens such as Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8D, zoom lens, tripod.

In Lieu of Song of the Week, I present…David Garrett

David Garrett - Rock Symphonies (Front Cover) by Eneas

This past weekend, February 12-13 2011,  I was fortunate enough to attend two David Garrett shows!  Oh yes…you read that right!  Two shows!  Why two? you ask.  Well, my Mom is a HUGE David Garrett fan thanks to me introducing her to his music.  She wanted to see two of his shows and asked me to come along. I said, sure.  So, who is David Garrett?  In a nutshell, he is an amazing violinist that pushes through boundaries of music that he plays; he rocks.  I talked all about him on the following posts:  Thursday Tunes: David Garrett (wow…time sure does fly)  Concerts! Concerts! Concerts!

bar47

Our first show was held in Madison, Wisconsin on February 13th. We drove up to Madison early afternoon, arrived at our hotel, had a quick dinner.  We then headed to the event’s location; located our seats which were not bad at all, sat back and enjoyed a fabulous show. I think what I like best about David Garrett is the variety & different levels of intensity at which he plays.  He also does a nice job introducing each piece; I appreciate that.  There were several pieces that I felt much emotion and that is cool – to see the emotion from which he plays, and at times, it felt like the violin was singing.

After the show, we then attended the Meet and Greet session.  Yes indeed, I met David Garrett.  Ummm…well, I loved the show, but I must say the meet and greet was not much to be desired.  My Mom loved that part, but I thought it was rather lame.  The coolest part of the m&g were my Mom’s friends – Sandy, and Theresa.  Honestly, those people cracked me up, especially Sandy. Mind you, these women (including my Mom) are far removed from the teenage years (not certain the age of Theresa).  I swear though, these women however did seem almost like teenage groupies…almost.  No worries DG, they will not hunt you down demanding babies, but they may hunt you down to make sure you are taking care of yourself.  A bonus was Sandy’s husband, Mike.  He tempered the gushing group of women at the Madison event; helped tone them down to my more reserved enthusiasm.  Yeah, these people were fun.

Now, why did I think the m&g was lame?  First off, the PBS people were a bit much into the whole control factor during the meet & greet, albeit, friendly.    They would not allow any photos to be taken during the session.  Ummm..what?  Really?  Well,  I did indeed snap a few shots because well….I had to.  Really, I was directed to do so by my Mom.  See, she was presenting an album that a group of her friends put together in order to give to the man.  Wait…no really…wait… you should know, the album was not at all cheesy, nor did it take on the role of “fangirl stalker”.  Nope, this album actually turned out to look rather classy with each person contributing a page in order to express their appreciation of David Garrett’s music.  My Mom was the perfect person to present this album to DG because she is a force to be reckoned with.  Truly, my Mom does not bow down to her inhibitions; she goes forth and conquers.  She commands attention, and attention she receives.  While I do indeed admire these qualities that my Mom possess, I also become highly embarrassed as this goes fully against my nature; can’t help myself.    I was soooo embarrassed during her presentation that I could not stay in line to do my own “meet and greet”  and I could barely take any photos, but I did take a few and the few I took I am grateful for because the PBS photos are horrid (terrible, terrible quality and horrible composition…ugh!!!).  I also got back into line, and did indeed meet this talent.

The other lame factor of this m&g was David himself.  Sorry to say, but yeah, DG was not into this event.  He looked fairly tired, and maybe possibly a bit bored.  He was not animated at all….blah.  Still, I did fully realize how tall he is  (by my standards, and not too big of a feat considering that I am not very tall myself), and he smokes (could smell it).

Wait!!! Don’t stop reading; it gets better, much better!

Sunday, February 13th arrived, we drove home, and later that evening, we attended our second show in Chicago at the Chicago Theatre. Our group, this evening: my Mom, my Dad, Jody, Brett, Robert and I.

This show was fantastic!  Seriously!  I am so glad that I went to this one because wow….he and his bandmates were great!  They had wonderful energy on stage, and the music really spoke to me.  Well, actually, I could feel the emotions of the violin. I also was able to see David Garrett rather well; sitting in the third row – center aisle seat. Amazing!  He really gets into his music.  It is always a curious thing to me; watching an artist at work.  The emotions that cross ones face while playing their instrument is intense…at times.  I love that part; the emotions.  This night, it looked like they were having fun on stage, and the biggest bonus was the meet & greet.

Oh yes, I attended yet another one….with my Mom.   This meet & greet was a night and day difference from the one held in Madison, Wisconsin.  The people running this m&g were laid back; cool.  We, the fans, were able to take photos with our cameras.  David (I am on a first name basis with him now.  hahaha!) seemed enthused, animated, and far more into this m&g session. He did not look tired; he looked fabulous!!!   No worries Josh Groban, or Muse…you are still tops to me.  Smile  Anyway, DG conversed a bit with his fans, and in general, the group was more animated themselves as well.  This evening created a bigger fan out of me.

Will I go to more David Garrett shows?  You better believe it.  I also would not mind attending with my Mom either; she is very cool indeed!

DSC_0010

The Music:  On to the important stuff!!  I love listening to David Garrett live. I find the music fills me more as I hear the violin. It is, for lack of better way to describe, full;  I hear the interpretations, the rawness.  For me, the studio albums loose this bit of rawness; edge that I like so well.  Still though, the studio albums are fantastic.  So you know, I would love to hear him play with an orchestra, and Jody disagrees with me about the live vs studio.

The following are a few of the songs that I really enjoyed; greatly.  I should note, our concerts were sans orchestra.

Rock Symphony (D. Garrett/ J. Haywood)
I really like this one…I just do.

November Rain (Guns N’ Roses)
I think this is a fantastic rendition.

Zorba’s Dance
A fun, fun song.

Master of Puppets (Metallica)
I do like this song, and I do get a kick out of the fact that my Mom likes DG’s rendition.

Child’s Anthem (Toto)
I am not certain if he played this one. Robert says no, and I say…why does it sound so familiar?  Well, duh, if not at DG’s concert then because I heard Toto many times.  Anyway, I really like it.

Side Note:  The appreciation album, at the second meet and greet…my Mom gave David (remember, I am on a first name basis. haha) an additional page to insert into the album that she gave him the prior night.  I must say, both nights, he was attentive to her.  This night, for me, I was far more relaxed, and really did not care if he thought I was hangin’ with a bunch of crazies, because they are fun women who simply admire the man’s musical talent.  Anyway, he did seem personable; one who you could joke with…not that I did, not really anyway.

The appreciation album; like I said, the ladies did a great job, but two pages in particular stood out to me.  My Mom’s (of course) and Allison Pang wrote  a fantastic letter, and poem. I really liked what she wrote; pretty cool. The album was not cheesy at all…very neat, and wow!  Fantastic!  I wish I could show all this album, but alas, it is not mine to share.

The Chicago Theatre is breathtaking. I love this theatre.  The coolest part was weaving our way down to the meet & greet. We went into the bowels, the life of the theater.  The hallways were artsy, and marked to passing of time with murals of productions that were held in this theatre. These murals were also signed by the cast.  I took a photo of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; saw this production twice – at Chicago theatre – with Donny Osmond…. Amazing!!!

The Music…. I love listening to Child’s Anthem, November Rain, and Master of Puppets.  When I was 18 or so, I loved listening to Guns N’ Roses, and Metallica so I get a kick out of DG playing these songs. However, I get the biggest kick out of the fact that my Mom likes to listen to DG’s rendition of these songs.  “Ummm…Mom, hey, you would not have listened to the originals…what’s up???”  Smile

The Band….so, I am thinking this is not a secret, but just in case, I shall tell you…I really love listening to the bass, and drums…the beat, and life of a song (I think).  This means, I got a kick out of watching the drummer during the show. Now, now….I did indeed watch David a whole lot, but hey…one needs to change up their visuals, you know, and the drummer was rather interesting to watch.  Just saying.  Smile
Oh, I should note, I did  change up the visuals even more by watching the two guitarists: Marcus Wolf, and Franck Van Der Heijden.  Okay….I only know their names because of my Mom.

Did you read this whole post?  You did?  Wow!  I think you deserve a reward; what shall it be???

bar47

For kicks….the originals….
