Buddy Review with Annie: Dreamfever by Karen Marie Moning

dreamfever Dreamfever
by Karen Marie Moning
copyright 2009

Back Cover:
He has stolen her past, but MacKayla will never allow her sister’s murderer to take her future. Yet even the uniquely gifted sidhe-seer is no match for the Lord Master, who has unleashed an insatiable sexual craving that consumes Mac’s every thought—and thrusts her into the seductive realm of two very dangerous men, both of whom she desires but dares not trust.
As the enigmatic Jericho Barrons and the sensual Fae prince V’lane vie for her body and soul, as cryptic entries from her sister’s diary mysteriously appear and the power of the Dark Book weaves its annihilating path through the city, Mac’s greatest enemy delivers a final challenge...
It’s an invitation Mac cannot refuse, one that sends her racing home to Georgia, where an even darker threat awaits. With her parents missing and the lives of her loved ones under siege, Mac is about to come face-to-face with a soul-shattering truth—about herself and her sister, about Jericho Barrons…and about the world she thought she knew.

Buddy Review:
Annie from
Reading, Writing and Ranting and I have both read Dreamfever. Matter of fact, we have read the whole ‘Fever’ Series. We both love this series and have emailed each other about the ‘Fever’ Series in the past, especially after reading Faefever.
For Dreamfever, we decided to go ahead and do a buddy review. How does a buddy review work? We read the book and then emailed each other questions to answer. You can read my thoughts
at Annie’s blog and her thoughts here on my blog.

Buddy Review with Annie from Reading, Writing and Ranting :

Overall, how did you feel about this book, Dreamfever, as compared to the other books in the series?

I must admit that I’ve become a bit insatiable with this series. I think Dreamfever took the novels to a whole other level but it left me wanting more, more, more!

What did you think of Danni? Was she annoying or did you find her to be an asset to the story?

I think Danni was an asset to Mac. I think without her, Mac would lose her softer side – to me she represents the innocence that Mac has lost (even though Danni would punch me for calling her innocent!)

What about Mac? What did you think of her in this story?

I love ‘Black Mac’! She really isn’t shy about saying what she thinks anymore, is she? Every time she called Rowena ‘old woman’ I couldn’t help but smile. I think she’s gutsy and fierce and exactly who she needed to be to overcome the event at the end of Faefever.

What did you think of the action that took place in this book?

It certainly was action-packed enough! It moved really fast…I just wish more of it had centered around Barrons and Mac *sigh*

What did you love about the book?

I loved the way Mac kept jumping into Barrons’s head. I loved all his memories and how she controlled what she wanted to see (or maybe just had the illusion of control). I felt like with this book I was given so many extra pieces of the puzzle – I just don’t know where any of them fit yet!

Was there anything you disliked about the book?

To be honest, I found the Sidhe-Seer scenes dragged a little at times. However that’s only because I was more interested in the romantic dynamic between Mac and Barrons. Having said that, it still held my interest and I think these were probably essential to the plot yet to reveal itself in the last book.

Fess up, Who has won your loyalty, Barrons or V'Lane?

Definitely Barrons! You said that you're pretty sure you'll stay a Barrons fan no matter what happens in the last book...I feel the same way. He's just too seductive, too powerful, too mysterious and too unforgettable! Besides, I'm thinking V'Lane may end up being one of the bad guys.

So tell me, Out of the four books - Darkfever, Bloodfever, Faefever and Dreamfever - Which one is your favorite?

This one was up there! I loved Darkfever because of the Mac-Barrons dynamics and I wish Dreamfever had a little more of that. It was still amazing and what we did get was absolute dynamite. I appreciated all the layers of plot in this novel - it was so complex and KMM is so talented to write like this.

Did you like the ending? Is this ending better than Faefever's?

Better? Yes. Bigger cliff-hanger? Definitely! It’s going to be a loooooooong wait till Shadowfever.

What do you think Shadowfever will bring to us, the reader?

I think KMM has setup Shadowfever to be a white-knuckled read. Every book before this one has been like climbing to the top of the rollercoaster. I think with Dreamfever, we finally got the peak and there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs at a break-neck speed before we reach the finish line.

Okay...Annie...tell me, how are you ever going to wait until Shadowfever is released? What can we do? Speculate? Try to forget this story...try? What are your thoughts on the release date?

Do we have an official release date yet? I plan to try to forget the Fever series (if I can) until then because my plan coming up the release of Dreamfever was to obsess over every single clue written in the books and it just turned me into a raving lunatic! Having said that, I have no self-control. Maybe we should just give into our obsession and plan a re-read 1 month out from the release date?

(Me answering: Umm..yeah! You are on Annie. Let’s plan a re-read 1 month out from the release date)

Before you go an read the spoilers, I want to put in a reminder. You can read my thoughts on Dreamfever over at Annie’s blog: Reading, Writing and Ranting.

There must be more to Mac than we are being told, don't you think? Who do you think Mac truly is?

Hmm…this is tough. I spend so much time speculating about Barrons that I sometimes forget Mac has her own mystery. I really don’t have any interesting theories to throw around except that I think she’s the world’s last hope.

What did you think of the "Hall of Rooms" and the other realms?

I was shocked when Mac saw Christian in the Hall of Rooms!! How did I not see that coming? That part of the book made it really feel like a fantasy novel and I felt it was really well done. Where’s she going to end up next?!

OMG...how about Barrons? Geesh...I am thinking at this moment...well, you tell me your thoughts. Who or What do you think Barrons is?

Okay, my original theory was that Barrons was the son of the Unseelie King and his mortal mistress. I felt that he had to be one of the Fae but perhaps not completely one of them. But then after his flashbacks and IYD, I’m not sure if that could be possible. I can’t wait to hear your theories! I love that one of the biggest suspense plot-lines in this book comes from just wanting to know what species the hero is!

The ending.... who do you think is the beast?

It has to be Barrons…only I’m thinking it’s only a part of Barrons – like maybe his inner demon? Barrons can’t be completely dead!

Thanks Annie. This has been great fun!

Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell

DSC_3291Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life
by Rachel Renee Russell
copyright 2009

Challenge: Mom - Musings: Kids Choice Pick (my own challenge)

Back Cover:
New school. New mean girl. New crush. New diary so Nikki can spill about all of it...

First Sentence:
Sometimes I wonder if my mom is BRAIN DEAD.

My Thoughts:
A quick and easy read about 14 year old Nikki’s take on her life as she enters 8th grade at an exclusive school. She feels like an outsider that can not compare to those peers surrounding her, thus, she is a dork. Between the insights of Nikki and her illustrations, Dork Diaries was a delight to read. Most of the entries, written on lined paper, included an illustration of that day’s angst. These illustrations added to seriousness and humor of the story. I really liked the illustrations as they were very appealing. I enjoyed the graphic novel approach. The delight of the story was reading how Nikki discovers, for herself, that it is better to embrace who she is rather than try to be what she thinks others find appealing. Nikki was a fun and captivating girl for whom brought me back to my school days and views on my parents. ha!
Dork Diaries held a high appeal with my 10 year old daughter. I think my 12 year old daughter may like the story as well.
Dork Diaries was a very entertaining read.

Rating: 4/5 stars

EJ’s Thoughts (age 10):
Dork Diaries was great! Nikki is a dork in her school, well she thinks she is. She is spunky and funny. Mostly, though, funny. My favorite scene was when they were in McKenzie’s house. My favorite quote is: “I actually woke up screaming my head off until I realized it was all just a very bad dream!”

More Thoughts from EJ:

Re-Read Thoughts: Dragonfly In Amber by Diana Gabaldon

Dragonfly In Amber
by Diana Gabaldon
copyright 1992
Challenge:
Repeat Reading
My original review:
Dragonfly In Amber

From GoodReads:
For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ... about a love that transcends the boundaries of time ... and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his....
Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire's spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ... in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising ... and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves....

For my re-read thoughts, I am going to use the same questions that I asked myself for my other re-read – Outlander.

Do I still feel the same about the book as I did with the first read?
Ummm…YES!

  • This book ranked up there as one of my favorites in the series. After the re-read, it still does.

Anything new or remembered stand out to me?
With Dragonfly In Amber, several things did stand out for me. This time, these things centered, mostly, around events.

  • There is a tragic event that occurs with Claire. I remembered, from my first read, wondering why she felt so alone physically and emotionally. I essentially knew why but I was missing a piece. This re-read provided me with the piece…it was an ahhh moment. Jamie’s involvement, or lack-there-of became clearer.
  • I was able to keep better track of the passage of time. For instance, during the above mentioned tragic event, Jamie and Claire were actually separated for three months. That was a moment of ohhhh…..
  • Details were more easily obtainable for my reading eyes. This I think is true because I was able to listen/read slower which helped to flesh the details out. I was able to go a bit slower because I was not so wrapped up in the overall story – I knew what was going to happen.

Was I bored during the second reading?
Boredom is always risk when rereading a book.

  • My answer, No.
Again, a sense of comfort, of “ahhh”, of satisfaction filled me during the reading.
  • Okay. I know. That is the same answer I gave for my Outlander re-read thoughts but hey, it is true.

Audiobook vs Book, what did I think?
I have heard, from several other bloggers, how the audiobooks are wonderful.
I was skeptical because first and foremost, I am not an audiobook fan. I am not an auditory learning so listening to books takes much concentration unless the narration is done very well. Usually that means, the book must presented dramatically. I decided, having some credits laying around in my audible account, to give Dragonfly In Amber a go in the audiobook format.

  • I was wrong about being skeptical! This audiobook rocked! Specifically, Davina Porter – the narrator rocked!
  • Once I became accustomed to her voice, which did not take long, she became Claire – for me. Her intonations were incredible. She kept me listening, she did not lull me into boredom (as some voices can do).
  • The only thing that was a bit bothersome was her voice for Jamie. Ummm…yeah, that is sooo not how I pictured his voice. I got over it. How? My friend, Jody, explained to me that she would not actually think of the voice as Jamie’s rather as the woman narrating for Jamie. Something like that. Anyways, once I put that thought into my head, perfect!
  • The crazy person that I am, I know that I will listen to all the Outlander books in this audio format. Not only will I listen, I will re-read the books themselves.

Just as with Outlander, My original review of Dragonfly In Amber still stands.

I know that I will
re-read this book numerous times.

Favorite quotes/passages:

She smiled in her sleep, a brief reflex of contentment, gone as soon as it appeared. My own smile lingered as I watched her, and whispered to her sleep-deaf ears, as I had so many times before, “God, you are so like him.”

"Well, I’ll tell ye, Sassenach, ‘graceful’ is possibly not the first word that springs to mind at thought of you.” He slipped an arm behind me, one hand large and warm around my silk-clad shoulder.
”But I talk to you as I talk to my own soul,” he said, turning me to face him. He reached up and cupped my cheek, fingers light on my temple.
”And, Sassenach,” he whispered, “your face is my heart.”

"I found myself thinking that I had always heretofore assumed that the tendency of eighteenth-century ladies to swoon was due to tight stays; now I rather thought it might be due to the idiocy of eighteenth-century men."

"D'ye think I don't know?" he asked softly. "It's me that has the easy part now. For if ye feel for me as I do for you-then I'm asking you to tear out your heart and live without it."

Booking Through Thursday with sadness…

BookingThroughThursday Today’s Booking Through Thursday question is:

What’s the saddest book you’ve read recently?

(Is any body getting bored with this series of “recent” questions? Because I’m having fun!)

Saddest? Hmm..one book came to my mind immediately. Even so, I tried to think of others. I realized, I do not read many sad books. I read many books that evoke lots of emotion, that keep my on the edge of my seat, that fret me with worry but one that overall stands out to me as sad, a tear jerker – not many.

The saddest book that I have read goes to…

Time The Time-Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger .
This book, hands down, evoked a vast amount of sadness.

I wrote in my
review: I was happy, I was sad, I was worried, I was pleased, I cried...I cried!!

Even though I found this book to resonate a great amount of sadness, I will re-read this gripping story.

What has been your saddest book?

Wondrous Words - Sept 23

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Bermudaonion's Weblog.
This is where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading.
Feel free to join in the fun by going to Bermudaonion's Weblog - Wondrous Words Wednesday.
Check out other participants words, post a link to your words.
My words have come from a book that I just completed titled:

P&P

Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favorite reads.
I am currently re-reading this book and have been stumbling upon many words that are begging to be read and understood.
The following is a sampling of some the wonderful words that are used throughout the story.

Pedantic- [pi-ˈdan-tik] adjective  Date: circa 1600

of, relating to, or being a pedant
narrowly, stodgily, and often ostentatiously learned

Mary had neither genius nor taste; and though vanity had given her application, it had given her likewise a
pedantic air and conceited manner, which would have injured a higher degree of excellence than she had reached.  p.26

Panegyric- [pan-i-jir-ik] noun Latin - use of panēgyricus of, belonging to a public assembly < Gk panēgyrikós, equiv. to pan gyr(is) solemn assembly
Date: 1590-1600

1.a lofty oration or writing in praise of a person or thing; eulogy.
2.formal or elaborate praise.

When you told Mrs. Bennet this morning, that if you ever resolved on quitting Netherfield you should be gone in five minutes, you meant it to be a sort of panegyric, of compliment to yourself; and yet what is there so very laudable in a precipitance which must leave very necessary business undone, and can be of no real advantage to yourself or any one else?  p. 49

Precipitance – [pri-sip-i-tuh n-see] noun  Date: 1610-1620

the quality of happening with headlong haste or without warning

At least, therefore, I did not assume the character of needless precipitance merely to show off before the ladies.”  p. 49

Expostulation- [-ˌspäs-chə-ˈlā-shən] noun  Date: 1540

To reason earnestly with someone in an effort to dissuade or correct; remonstrate

Miss Bingley warmly resented the indignity he had received, in an
expostulation with her brother for talking such nonsense.  p.51

What’s On Your Nightstand? October 2009

Nightstand

5 Minutes for Books asks once a month - What is on your nightstand?

I am posting about my goals for the month of October.

I did NOT do well with my September goals. Matter of fact, I bombed. I have only read 6 books to date which is far below my monthly reading average. Thinking that my change in pace is what decreased my reading - up every day by 6 am, sending children of to school, busy with child at home, work, work, and always tired this month.

October's reading will still have a high number of books on the nightstand list but I have chosen 8-9 books to focus in on. Once those books are read, I will then select my reading randomly from the nightstand list.

The focus books will be denoted by #

Last Month, I asked, “Which new release book am I most excited about?”

Hmmm…I am thinking you already know this answer by my numerous related posts. However, if you do not, the answer is….

Repost: Music Musings: Outlandish Playlist (In Progress)

I am reposting this post – original publish date July 13th. Why? An Echo in the Bone is being released today. Thought it would be a good idea to present this playlist, of sorts, again for some feedback.

Music Musings...there are artists/songs that twist around in my head.

What has been twisting around my head for a bit of time is the idea to put together a playlist of songs/music that fit the Outlander Book series.
This playlist would be called: Outlandish Playlist

I need your help. I need your ideas, thoughts, opinions and suggestions.
I need your help to put together an Outlandish Playlist.

It is no secret, the Outlander book series is one of my most favorite series of books. The depth of emotion and essence of time is amazing.

While reading the books, I was, innocently, listening to a song. While listening to the song a thought popped into my mind. The thought - "This song reminds me of Claire and Jamie." The thought stayed with me whenever I would listen to the song.

That innocent, clear out of left-field thought led me to thinking..."I would love to listen to an Outlander related playlist." This thinking has led me down the path of formulating a playlist.

I am hoping that you, my reader, will add your thoughts, opinions and suggestions.
I would love to expand this Outlandish Playlist.
I would love to add more songs to the list from your suggestions. I even, with your input, would delete some of the songs that I already have on the list as I am not certain about most of them.
I need your help.

OutlanderCollege3 Many of the songs listed in the playlist are songs that came to me and by that I mean, I was listening to my music innocently and pop...I thought...."this is a song for the Outlandish Playlist". Several of the songs I did specifically hunt down.
I feel that most of the songs that are on my list are better related to book three and beyond although there are a few that can flow throughout the whole series.
I really need suggestions for books one and two. Even so, I still need suggestions for the whole series. If you have any ideas for the specific books then, please, let me know that as well.

All of the songs keep a simplistic sound. A sound of acoustic in instrument and voice.
I have tried to avoid songs that utilize electronic instruments or sounds although there are a few of those songs present.

Let me highlight a few of the songs that I have discovered/found for the playlist.
After the highlighted songs, the playlist will follow.
Take a listen.
Please then leave a comment giving me your input.
Thanks.

The Story by Brandi Carlile.
This song will stay as it was "the" song that innocently started my brain turning about with the idea of an Outlandish Playlist.
Why this song? It evokes emotion. Emotions of - "Claire is meant for Jamie." "Jamie is meant for Claire." "They are meant to be." I so feel that this is a Claire and Jamie song yet it more so from Claire's point-of-view.
Every line in lyric fits so well with the story of Claire, the story of Claire and Jamie. I think this song can cover all the books.

Til Kingdom Come by Coldplay
Why this song? It is a beautiful acoustic song and it provokes emotion. Again, Emotions of an relationship that is meant to be - Jamie and Claire.

Love Me Back To Life by BonJovi
This song most certainly has a rock edge to it but gosh the words are great! Besides, I love BonJovi.
Found this song listed on the
Ladies of Lallybroch forum.

Have You Ever by Brandi Carlile
This song is fun. I am not exactly sure why...but I just feel it fits.

Closer To You by Brandi Carlile
Another Clarie and Jamie song. Is it a perfect fit? Probably not, but it does have the emotion.

What Can I Say by Brandi Carlile
When I hear this song, I think of Claire back in her present time trying to lead her life all the while feeling her loss of Jamie.

Again Today by Brandi Carlile
This song I feel fits more with Clarie during the time she was living back in the present. I really feel she experienced a great amount of heartache during her time away from Jamie.

The feel, the essence, the emotion that is evoked by this music is amazing. I think that song can fit the time of Jamie.

Another emotional piece although, I think, this one evokes more emotions of sadness.

Side note: The music of Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning is by far my most favorite instrumental songs that I have found that I feel could overall fit. Yet, there are very few listed on the playlist service, for example, the song Golden City found on the album Byzantium. That song is wonderful.

Huron 'Beltran' Fire Dance by Lorena McKennitt
This song, for me, evokes emotion of fear, danger and worry along with expectation and excitement. These are all emotions that I have felt throughout the series.

I will Find You by Clannad
I am not so certain about this song but there is something about it that I think could fit.

The rest of the songs on my playlist - Invocation, Highwayman, Never-Ending Road and Cymbeline - I like but am the least certain.

Take a listen to the Outlandish Playlist - In Progress

Please give me your comments - your suggestions, thoughts, opinions.
