The Queen's Fool

The Queen's Fool
by Philippa Gregory
Published 2004

From Amazon.com
A young woman caught in the rivalry between Queen Mary and her half sister, Elizabeth, must find her true destiny amid treason, poisonous rivalries, loss of faith, and unrequited love.

It is winter, 1553. Pursued by the Inquisition, Hannah Green, a fourteen-year-old Jewish girl, is forced to flee Spain with her father. But Hannah is no ordinary refugee. Her gift of "Sight," the ability to foresee the future, is priceless in the troubled times of the Tudor court. Hannah is adopted by the glamorous Robert Dudley, the charismatic son of King Edward's protector, who brings her to court as a "holy fool" for Queen Mary and, ultimately, Queen Elizabeth. Hired as a fool but working as a spy; promised in wedlock but in love with her master; endangered by the laws against heresy, treason, and witchcraft, Hannah must choose between the safe life of a commoner and the dangerous intrigues of the royal family that are inextricably bound up in her own yearnings and desires.

I thoroughly enjoyed our Heroine - Hannah. I cheered for her, I was disappointed for her, I was saddened for her, I was worried for her...

We "watch" Hannah grow from a young, foolish naive girl of 14 as the Queen's Fool to a woman with integrity, honesty and loyalty. We "watch" Hannah's life be touched by her Father, Lord Robert, Princess (Queen) Mary, Princess Elizabeth and Daniel. Each brought qualities that lead Hannah to grow and develop into a strong woman.

I felt sorry for those of Royalty or close to Royalty as their lives were driven by desire for power along with the quickness that that the power could fail and be taken away.

The society back int he 1500's was of were people's lead by fear and horror. Lives could be extinguished at the slightest whim of a new law which if breached would be considered treason and then death. A cruel society.

The characters of Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth were to be pitied and disgusted.

Hannah, although fictional, could have been a real person. A real Jewish girl suffering, struggling and accomplishing during the reign of Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth.

Ultimately, The Queen's Fool is about the learning of truth, honesty, loyalty, compassion and love.

The Queen's Fool is compelling and engrossing.
A very good read.
Highly recommended.

Operation Playtime - Day 9 - Playdough, glopp and Yuk!

taken from: Operation Playtime
Each day I’ll be sharing a play activity you can adapt and try with your little one.
These are the activities you’ve read about and perhaps
like me too, haven’t got around to doing them or certainly not as much as you’d like. Let’s carve out the time and try them together. The activity isn’t as important as how the children and you do it together. We can let them steer and guide us for this activity- within safe limits of course.

Take a look at Operation Playtime for further daily ideas and information.

January 28th

We love playdough! Love it! I like making homemade playdough. I like the texture of homemade playdough and the fact that it does not crumble like the store bought stuff does.

Since we play with playdough frequently I thought, why not jazz this up a bit and make salt dough.

Let me tell you....
Salt dough is not for us. The little ones had fun but for a very short period of time compared to our playdough fun. Grace did not like the salt dough on her hands. The stuff gooped up in between her fingers. We did manage to "make" a few "rocks" which I will have the little ones paint once they are dried. Grace made a little handprint disk.

Another thing...I will remember to not do an activity like salt dough again one hour before I have to leave for work. The mess! OMG...the mess! The cleanup was fun for the little ones...what kiddo does not love to play in the kitchen sink. The mess! The water was everywhere. Goodness...hard to believe I made it to work on time.

All in all...it is fun to do something different with the children. It is fun to jazz up the day and I hope to keep finding ways to jazz up our weeks...

Thursday Tunes - Sovereign Grace

Thursday Tunes is hosted by  S. Krishna's Books.
Each week music will be showcased.  Join in on the fun, share what you are listening to, what music artist you have discovered, to see what others are showcasing, etc.

I am eclectic by nature.  My music choices show that I am eclectic.

With music, I go through phases of what type of music I want to listen to.  The phase could last a season, it could last a week.  At this moment, I am in a phase of listening to an artist over and over again for several days and then throw in something new.

Currently, I am listening to Amy Macdonald over and over again and now for the new...

I was on a bunny trail through the world of the Internet and happened across Sovereign Grace

Wow!  If you want to listen to some great Christian Worship Music then Sovereign Grace fits the bill.  I am impressed.  The lyrics are great and enriching to my soul..the beat is uplifting and the voices are wonderful.

Sovereign Grace has many albums  and they are currently on sale. Take a look.

An album that I own via MP3 download is Psalms.  (Take a listen)

From Sovereign Grace:
For centuries the book of Psalms has informed, directed, and inspired the worship of God’s people. Without minimizing the struggles of living in a fallen world, this book exudes a confident trust in the God who is good and rules over all.
These twelve songs have emerged from those ancient poems and prayers. Our aim is to offer fresh interpretations of individual psalms, especially in light of the crucified and risen Savior to whom they point.

Psalms is an incredible album.  It has ministered to my soul this last 24 hours of listening.
My favorite songs (so far) are...
You Will Never Change (this is the type of music - beat I like the most)

The next album I would like to purchase is Looked Upon.  The tracks sound awesome.
Then I would like to purchase Come Weary Saints

Tell me...did you take a listen to Sovereign Grace?  Which song "speaks" to you?

What music album/song/artist are you "grabbing" to listen to?

Beauty: A Retelling of the story of Beauty & The Beast

Beauty: A Retelling of the story of Beauty & The Beast
by Robin McKinley
copyright: 1978

Except for the faint and flickering light of the fire the room was in darkness; there was a table behind the occupied armchair, and on it stood a candelabrum of a dozen tall candles, but they remained dark. I realized I was standing in a little halo of light, the candles in the hall shining around me as I stood on the threshold. My eyes slowly adjusted themselves to the bloom beyond the door. I caught a gleam of dark-green velvet on what might have been a knee in the shadowed armchair. "Good evening, Beauty." said a great harsh voice.

Beauty is a wonderful story. The author does a fabulous job staying true to the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast while giving us some wonderful dimensions into our Heroine - Beauty and her family with their love for one another.

I was the youngest of three daughters. Our literal-minded mother named us Grace, Hope and Honour, but few people except perhaps the minister who had baptized all three of us remembered my given name. My father still likes to tell the story of how I acquired my odd nickname.... "Huh! I'd rather be Beauty"...the name at least was attached to me securely....by the time it was evident that I was going to let the family down by being plain, I'd been called Beauty for over six years; and while I came to hate the name, I was too proud to ask that it be discarded. I wasn't really fond of my given name, Honour, either.

I also appreciated the portrayal of the Beast as I was only familiar with the Disney version, I must say out with Disney and in with Robin McKinley.

"You know, the first drop of hope that I tasted was that day I first showed you the library - when you were confronted with the works of Browning, and of Kipling, and you saw them. You might not have; you might have seen only Aeschylus and Caesar and Spenser, and authors you could have known in your old world." He went on as it talking to himself: "Later, I realized that this was only a reflection of your love and trust for books; it had nothing to do with me, or with my castle and its other wonders. And the birds came to you; that seemed at hopeful sign. But they came because of the strength of your longing for your old home. But perhaps it was a beginning nonetheless."

"Last night," he began again at last, "when you fainted, you were helpless, for good or ill. I carried you to a couch in the next room, I was going to call your servants, and leave you alone. But when I tried to set you down, you murmured in your sleep, and held on to my coat with both hands." He stood up, took a few paces away from me, a few paces back. "For a few minutes you were content - even happy - that I held you in my arms. Then you remembered and ran away with panic..."

Beauty is truly a story of honor, truth, kindness and compassion and love. A truly Beautiful story.

A must read! Great for youth and adults alike.
This book will be staying on my shelf. I intend to re-read the book and hope that all my girls will enjoy reading Beauty.

Recommended for ages 11 and up.

Chalice by Robin McKinley

Chalice
by Robin McKinley
published 2008

amazon.com description
As the newly appointed Chalice, Mirasol is the most important member of the Master’s Circle. It is her duty to bind the Circle, the land and its people together with their new Master. But the new Master of Willowlands is a Priest of Fire, only drawn back into the human world by the sudden death of his brother. No one knows if it is even possible for him to live amongst his people. Mirasol wants the Master to have his chance, but her only training is as a beekeeper. How can she help settle their demesne during these troubled times and bind it to a Priest of Fire, the touch of whose hand can burn human flesh to the bone?

Mirasol is a wonderful heroine in that she is determined to do what is right, what is best even though she is lacking skills.  She forms a sincere relationship with Master.  We learn about Master and his desires to do right by his people but his character is not developed enough...IMHO.  I realize the story centers around Mirasol but a bit more of Master I believe would have brought in more depth.  I wish Mirasol and Master spoke a bit more often than they did.  I wish there was a bit more dialogue overall.

Chalice had a few drawbacks.  As I mentioned, the character of Master was not deeply developed.  It was difficult for me to understand the role of the The Chalice - to understand the society of the Willowlands.  I wish there was a bit of "history", "understanding of words" written into the storyline.  I also really did not get into the bee storyline part...not to the complete extent of storyline.

Beyond the drawbacks, Mirasol is a compelling character with courage and determination.

Chalice is a fair read and not my favorite book written by Robin Mckinley.

Kid's Choice - Flipped

Flipped
by Wendelin Van Draanen
copyright 2001

Flipped
was Evie's 8th Grade Literature class book assignment.
Nov. 2008

Amazon.com Description: The first time she saw him, she flipped. The first time he saw her, he ran. That was the second grade, but not much has changed by the seventh. She says: “My Bryce. Still walking around with my first kiss.” He says: “It’s been six years of strategic avoidance and social discomfort.” But in the eighth grade everything gets turned upside down. And just as he’s thinking there’s more to her than meets the eye, she’s thinking that he’s not quite all he seemed. This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny new voices. Wendelin Van Draanen is at her best here with a knockout cast of quirky characters and a hilarious series of misunderstandings and missed opportunities. But underlying the humor are two teens in transition. They are each learning to look beyond the surface of people, both figuring out who they are, who they want to be, and who they want to be with.

Evie's Review:

Flipped was okay.  The ending was pretty lame.  But whatever, it had a nice plot.  In my opinion, they should make a sequel because I hate cliff hanger endings.
I'd probably recommend this book to anyone in the age range of 10-13.

My take:

I appreciated reading the perspectives of Juli and Bryce. They each told about each incident in their point of view - the story "flipped". I saw each character grow and learn that they must look at the quality of a person rather than just judge from the outside. They each "flipped" in their way of thinking.

While this book was entertaining, a quick read and has a good message - I am not really sure the value of such book for an 8th grade Literature class assignment. I can see how the teacher could run with themes of making good decisions, look at a person character rather than just the surface, teach point of view. I can see how those who choose curriculum would think the students could relate to these characters.
Yet.... I think they could have chosen a better book to accomplish those type of themes and left this book for a personal reading choice. I do see this book as being a book a child would grab off the shelf to read on their own.

To Sum up:
I would recommend this to middle-school aged children. It is a good read. It is great to read both perspectives. Life lessons on how to treat others and make good choices is done well. I think girls (mostly) would like reading this book. It is worth the read.

As a classroom assigned book for an 8th grade literature class - well No! I want to say to the curriculum choosers...stop dumbing down our children. Please pick literature with more merit besides being entertaining, straight forth and easy to read.

It was suggested in the activity to utilize tools that we have not utilized before - kitchen tools.  We had a go at this.

Isaiah and Grace had a blast.

The Paint: red, blue, yellow and green washable poster paint.
The tools: spatula with slots, bottle cleaning brush, spatula for baking, whisks and a baster

Isaiah's favorite tool was most definitely  the baster.

Grace's favorite tool - her hands!
When you got hands why all the fuss with other tools??

Isaiah's final result with the baster tool.

Grace's final result with her hands.

Operation Playtime - Day 4 - Book Marathon

________________________________________________________________
taken from: Operation Playtime

Each day I’ll be sharing a play activity you can adapt and try with your little one.
These are the activities you’ve read about and perhaps like me too, haven’t got around to doing them or certainly not as much as you’d like. Let’s carve out the time and try them together.  The activity isn’t as important as how the children and you do it together. We can let them steer and guide us for this activity- within safe limits of course.
________________________________________________________________

I have joined in silently but today I thought - I am going try and post about each chosen activity.

Take a look at Operation Playtime for further daily ideas and information.

**************************************************************************

Today's (day 4) activity is reading.  Purposefully choosing to read many books to my children.

I like to read to my children already but I took this activity challenge on to expand our reading.

This morning we took a variety of books and laid them on our bed.  My bed is our favorite morning reading spot.  I chose several books to cover different themes.  We read and looked at the pictures and talked about items of interest.

These are the books we read.

This afternoon our theme will be winter books along with one favorite book from the morning.  We plan on reading under the tent that we have had up in our bedroom for the whole of this week.  Fun!  Oh, by the way, the lantern will be on.  Isaiah loves his flashlights!

Grace's favorite book choice is Olivia.

Isaiah's favorite book choice is ABC Bunny.  He choose this one because of the lizard.  He usually choose a favorite book based on a certain picture.

These are the books chosen for our afternoon read under our tent.

Our Tent.  It is a lot of fun!

Hair Cut and Nail Day...for Grace

Elizabeth loves to polish her fingernails.  This obsession has led its way to Elizabeth fancying up Grace's nails along with their young cousins'.  The little girls love it when Elizabeth gives them such attention.

On January 18th, Isaiah took scissors and cut his bangs - very short.  They were close to his hairline.  I thought, ok...I can live with this.  I love Isaiah's hair.  The more I looked I thought - well, maybe it is time for a cut.  The mornings will be easier with less hair fuss.  I then discovered that Isaiah also cut Grace's hair. This was her first ever haircut - Thanks Isaiah.
It is a bit hard to see where but I know!  He cut her hair on her right side towards her ear.  Grace's thin, wispy hair that looks unkept alot of the time hides the cutting well.

January 19th - time for a haircut!  Grandma came along and helped out.

Isaiah - Before his professional haircut.  Hard to see the bangs cut up to his hairline but they were.

Isaiah - After the professional haircut.

Grace - Before her 1st professional haircut.

Grace - After her 1st professional haircut.  Cannot see but the back is shortened up a bit and she does now have bangs.

Thursday Tunes... Amy Macdonald

I came across S. Krishna's Books post - Thursday Tunes.  I looked and discovered a wonderful artist named Amy Macdonald.  She is fabulous.  I listen to all her track previews and then downloaded the MP3 album.  I have listened to the whole album now at least twice.  The album is fabulous!  Cannot wait to share this find with my hubby.

Take a listen (you may have to pause my playlist music which is located on my sidebar down towards the bottom).

I am going to try and participate weekly in Thursday Tunes.  This week, I am not original and just am psyched about hearing Amy Macdonald that I am sharing the same artist as on S. Krinshna's Books.  Check out Amy Macdonald's YouTube page.
Next week, I will be original.
